TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida Lottery is adding a new game that owns the world record for largest jackpot.
Florida becomes the 43rd state to join the MEGA MILLIONS game. Tickets go on sale May 15.
Now the Florida Lottery offers the two biggest jackpot games in the country.
MEGA MILLIONS produced an eye-popping jackpot of $656 million about a year ago. Powerball generated a $587 million jackpot last November following 15 rollovers.
The jackpots for MEGA MILLIONS start at $12 million, while for Powerball they start at $40 million.
Lottery Secretary Cynthia O'Connell says she took a serious look at whether adding MEGA MILLIONS in Florida would diminish Powerball or Lotto sales.
"We have looked at it. We're going to be promoting Lotto heavily. We'll be promoting Powerball to make sure we can minimize any cannibalization of sales."
O'Connell says Lotto and Powerball have co-existed just fine in Florida since the state joined Powerball in January, 2009. She says players have been asking for the MEGA MILLIONS game for years so she expects it will fit in too.
"Floridians love Lotto our flagship jackpot game and, of course, the occasional player likes those large jackpots with Powerball. Now we're offering the second most recognized mega multi-state game with Mega Millions and we're really excited about that."
A MEGA MILLIONS ticket costs $1, while Powerball is $2 per play.
In each game, you have to match five numbers and a separate, sixth number to win the grand prize. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 175 million.
