Des Moines, IA (Sports Network) - In a Missouri Valley Conference matchup, Marc Sonnen scored 17 points to lead the Northern Iowa Panthers over the Drake Bulldogs, 71-64, at the Knapp Center.
Sonnen knocked down five 3-pointers while dishing out five assists and logging four steals for the Panthers (16-11, 9-6 MVC), who have won five in a row. Anthony James also scored 17 points, shooting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, while Jake Koch and Chip Rank added 11 points and five rebounds each. Koch also had three blocks and Deon Mitchell had eight assists.
Chris Hines was 7-of-12 from the field and 4-of-6 from long-range as he finished with 18 points for Drake (11-15, 5-10), which has lost four straight. Jordan Clarke had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Micah Mason and Seth VanDeest added 10 points each.
Drake shot 60.9 percent from the field in the first half, but UNI shot 54.2 percent while knocking down six 3-pointers to take a 33-32 lead into intermission.
In the second half the Panthers knocked down seven more 3-pointers and made good on 9-of-10 at the free-throw line in order to secure the win.
In a game that featured six ties and 17 lead changes, Drake was guilty of 18 turnovers and was a mere 3-of-4 at the free-throw line.
