JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Homicide Detectives with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office are investigating after witnesses found a man in his late forties lying in the roadway unresponsive.

JSO Homicide Sergeant T.K. Waters said police were called to the 1300 block of West 21st Street a little after 1:15 Tuesday morning.

Sgt. Waters said rescue workers took the man, who has not yet been identified by police, to Shands Jacksonville where medical staff pronounced him deceased.

Witnesses told police they heard several gunshots and then called 911, Waters said.

Detectives are unsure if the victim lives in the area.

Sgt. Waters said detectives will canvass the neighborhood in an attempt to gather information and speak to as many witnesses as possible.
