KINGS BAY, Ga. -- In a brief pinning ceremony Wednesday at Kings BayNaval Submarine Base, Lieutenant Junior Grade Marquette Leveque becameone of the first Navy female officers in history to be deemed qualifiedto operate a submarine.
The 24-year-old Leveque is a chemistry and radiological controls assistant assigned to the USS Wyoming.
Two other women qualified in pinning ceremonies on Wednesday.
Until 2011, women were prohibited from working on submarines. Today, 24 serve on submarines.
