What do you think? Does Eddie Murphy deserve to be at the top of
' Most Overpaid Actors in Hollywood
Here's the reasoning behind the pick:
His career is basically defunct, and recent films Imagine That, A Thousand Words and Meet Dave were colossal flops. Last year's Tower Heistalso failed to wow at the box office, earning $153 million on anestimated budget of $75 million. (In order to even come close to turninga profit, a movie has to earn twice its production budget in ticketsales, plus the millions spent on marketing, notes Forbes.) Murphy then backed out of hosting the Oscars, which didn't help matters.
Forbes estimates that for every $1 Murphy, 51, was paid for his past three films, they returned an average of $2.30 at the box office.
At least he seems to be doing well in the romance department. He's dating Aussie model Paige Butcher.
Forbes pulledthe list together by looking at the past three films each actor starredin over the past three years that opened in more than 2,000 theaters, calculating the return on investment for the studios who pay his (orher) salary.
Coming in second: Katherine Heigl. Her most recent film, One for the Money, earned $37 million on an estimated $40 million budget. For every dollarshe was paid on her past three movies, they earned an average of $3.40.
No. 3 may surprise you: Reese Witherspoon. The new mom hasn't had a hit lately.
No. 4. Sandra Bullock. Like Reese, she hasn't been on the big screen in a big way the past three years. The Blind Side in 2009 was huge, but since then All About Steve and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close were not box office successes.
No. 5. Jack Black. His latest return has been $5.20 on $1.
