MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. (WESH) - Two people were taken to the hospital after a single-engine plane crashed into trees near the Merritt Island Airport on Wednesday afternoon.

The pilot and only passenger were able to get out of the Comp Air plane on their own and walk to rescuers, according to Jeff Taylor from Brevard County Fire and Rescue.

The men were covered in jet fuel and were decontaminated before they were taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center.

The plane landed upside down, flipped over a canal and hit some trees.

The victims were men in their late 20s or early 30s, according to Taylor.

The airport remains open.
