JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- It's the first official day at the beach in Jacksonville, but a multi-million dollar construction project is still in the works on 1st Street.
"It hasn't helped, that's for sure," said Fionn MacCool's General Manager Paul Glaser.
The path to Fionn MacCool's in Jax Beach used to be clear.
Now navigating through potholes, dirt piles, and caution signs, Glaser said the construction has hurt business significantly.
"Last September we stopped opening for lunches because there just wasn't anybody coming in! All the streets were blocked off no matter what," said Glaser.
And while they still have a strong weekend crowd, the construction is not earning any points with the fashion police.
"At least if they would have put some sort of walkway across the street, so young ladies don't have to walk across the dirt in their high heels for a nice dinner or night out," he said.
As the luck of the Irish would have it, though, construction didn't start on their section of road until after St. Patrick's Day, March 17.
"For our section, yes, indeed, they gave it two extra days and waited. Started that following Monday, the 19," he said.
Crews have been working on 1st Street for more thansix monthsand with most of the work complete, Glaser hopes the finished product will bring people back down the road to Fionn MacCool's.
"It's really nice down there. It is beautiful, and that's what it's all about: beautifying Jax Beach," he said.
