HASTINGS, Fla. -- A First Coast potato grower is in hot water, accused of labor trafficking.
Florida Legal Services and Farmworker Justice filed a federal lawsuit against Bulls-Hit Ranch and Farm on behalf of two farm workers who said they worked at the Hastings ranch from 2009-2010.
The suit alleges that the farm's labor contractor recruited drug-dependent men from Jacksonville area homeless shelters and put them in decrepit housing at a crowded labor camp.
It claims the farm took money from the men's wages to cover their rent, food and drugs. The suits says this left the farm hands destitute and says the men feared for their safety if they tried to leave.
