JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 17-year-old Terry Parker High School student was arrested Thursday morning after School Board Police found a loaded handgun.

A student gave a tip to a staff member at Terry Parker High School around 9:40 Thursday morning that a handgun was on campus, according to Jill Johnson, Director of Communications for Duval County Public Schools.

Police removed the student, Thomas Whitlock, from his classroom. As Whitlock was walking outside of the portable classroom, a semiautomatic handgun fell out of his pants leg.

After Whitlock was arrested, police checked and found that the handgun was loaded, according to the arrest report.

Whitlock told police he found the gun "in some bushes at an abandoned property near his residence," according to the report.

School administrators, after interviewing Whitlock, said the student did not intend to harm anyone by bringing the gun to school, Jill Johnson said.

"The safety of our students is our top priority, and we commend the student for coming forward and providing information to officials. This is a Zero Tolerance Offense in our Student Code of Conduct and we plan on following those guidelines for student discipline," said Johnson.
