Local app developer creates something to rival Twitter and Facebook with Yubixi. It will be on display during One Spark this week.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- One Spark doesn't officially kick off until Wednesday, but we wanted to give some early exposure to local creators before the world's only crowdfunding festival began.
On the First Coast News Facebook page we have our own competition going on, asking for creators to submit their videos, and the public to vote on who they'd like to see featured on our newscasts.
Consistently one of our top vote getters has been an app called Yubixi, developed by Jacksonville Beach's Scott Hooks.
It's a new social network that's designed to connect people with common interests.
Hooks says his app stands out among the Twitters and Facebooks of the world.
"Other social networks are about keeping you in touch with people you already know," he said. "Yubixi is all about connecting people you don't know, but probably should know."
For instance, when you download the app you're asked to pick some interests.
They have 300 preset interests: football, beer, theater, etc.
You can also enter your own interests if they're not included in the list.
Then it connects people close to you who share your interest, that allows you to message them and perhaps meet up.
"We hope people will use the app to find each other, but then put down the phone and go get social," he said.
A high tech way of meeting new friends who have things in common. The official launch of the app is Wednesday.
You can meet Hooks and get a demonstration of Yubixi during the One Spark, his booth is in Hemming Plaza next to the main stage.
For voting purposes, his creator number is 20517.
