ATLANTA - Even when they were down 4-0 to Matt Harvey, the Atlanta Braves felt they had a chance.
 
They nearly pulled off another comeback, but the New York Mets held on for a 4-3 victory Tuesday in the opening game of a doubleheader.

Gerrit Cole had a memorable debut as he pitched into the seventh inning and hit a two-run single to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates in an 8-2 win over the San Francisco Giants in the opener of a three-game set at PNC Park. Cole (1-0) was taken by the Yankees in the first round of the 2008 draft, but chose to play in college at UCLA and was chosen first overall by Pittsburgh in the 2011 draft. The 22-year-old didn't disappoint as he escaped jams in the first two innings then set San Francisco down in order in the next four frames. He finished his outing responsible for two runs on seven hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of work. Pedro Alvarez went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run, three RBI and two runs scored while Starling Marte hit a solo homer for the Pirates, who had dropped four of six coming in. Julio Teheran carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning as the Atlanta Braves blanked Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-0, on Wednesday to complete a three-game series sweep at Turner Field. With two outs in the top of the eighth, Brandon Inge laced a clean single to left field for the Pirates' only hit of the game. Teheran (4-2) struck out 11, walked two and hit a pair of batters over eight innings to earn the win. Evan Gattis and Gerald Laird hit back-to-back solo homers in the sixth, while Chris Johnson and Dan Uggla added one RBI apiece for the Braves, winners in five straight. Pirates starter Wandy Rodriguez (6-4) left the game with one out in the first inning with tightness in his left forearm. He gave up one run on two hits before exiting.
