Jaguars News: Marrone refuses to claim success with 7-3 record, 5 players sidelined during practice

Jaguars HC Doug Marrone discusses Calais Campbell's impact

Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone isn't ready to look ahead to the playoffs.

Despite the Jaguars' 7-3 record and one-game AFC South lead, Marrone wants to keep his focus on the present and not the future.

The last time the Jaguars produced seven wins during a full season was 2010. Marrone's crew did it in just 10 games this year.

That said, Marrone doesn't view seven wins to be a major accomplishment. The Jaguars haven't clinched a winning record or a playoff berth yet.

While the team is surging on a four-game winning streak, Marrone knows there is plenty of work to be done before the Jaguars can claim any sort of success.

“I haven’t defined [the current four-game winning streak] as success," Marrone said.

"I think that is where that becomes difficult. I have always told the players. Last week was, ‘Six games in college gets you bowl eligible. It gets you nothing in the NFL. I hate to tell you, but seven games doesn’t do anything for you in the NFL either.’"

The Jaguars are looking to produce an eighth win this weekend. Marrone has his sights set on the Week 12 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

He will not look ahead to the Week 13 division matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.

"What I am trying to do for this football team is not look ahead," Marrone said.

"Learn from what we have done and keep it in the quarter. This is the third game of the third quarter. We have done a good job. We have flipped the switch because the first two quarters, we had lost the second game in both of them. We were able to win the second game [this quarter]. That is what we talked about last week. This one we have to go out and let’s win this quarter right now.”

Five players sidelined at practice

The Jaguars didn't offer a formal practice report Tuesday due to the schedule changes for Thanksgiving week.

Wide receiver Allen Hurns (ankle) sat out of practice after missing Sunday's win over the Cleveland Browns.

Right tackle Jermey Parnell (knee), left guard Patrick Omameh (quad) and linebackers Donald Payne (hamstring) and Blair Brown (hamstring) worked on a separate field from their teammates.

Kicker Josh Lambo (right hip), quarterback Blake Bortles (right wrist), wide receiver Marqise Lee (knee) and running back Leonard Fournette (ankle) were also projected to be on the injury report.

More News and Notes

- Marrone said he is concerned about Lambo's hip injury from the perspective of "protecting the team." He wants to make sure the team is prepared at the kicker position before the Jaguars leave for Arizona.

Marrone isn't sure when the injury occurred, but the head coach said he didn't think it impacted Lambo's missed 41-yard field goal against the Browns.

- The Jaguars added linebacker Brooks Ellis (6-2, 245 lbs.) to the practice squad Monday. The Jaguars only have four healthy active linebackers heading into Week 12's game against the Cardinals. All three starters are good to go and backup SAM linebacker Lerentee McCray is available.

With Payne and Brown sidelined in practice, Ellis is taking on their reps. If Payne and Brown are unavailable for Sunday's game, Ellis may get a call up to the main roster Saturday.

Ellis signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent out of Arkansas in May. Ellis played in just one preseason game for the Patriots before being released on Sept. 5.

In 49 games at Arkansas, Ellis produced 290 tackles, 3.5 sacks, four interceptions and 13 pass breakups.

- For those who missed it, the San Francisco 49ers claimed second-year defensive tackle Sheldon Day off waivers Monday. Day was waived by the Jaguars Saturday in order to make room for one of the three players the team activated for Week 11's game against the Browns.

Day was Jacksonville's fourth-round pick in last year's NFL Draft.
