AUGUSTA, ME -- A basketball player at the University of Maine at Augusta is getting a lot of attention these days -- not so much for his play on the court, but because he's out there at all.
UMA backup Charlie Bickford is 52-years-old. He played one season of college basketball 27 years ago at Manchester Community College in Connecticut and recently returned to UMA to finish up his degree.
Bickford says all he wanted to do was prove to himself that he could hold his own with the young guys, but the team is so desperate for players, the coach asked him to join.
"It's fun," he said.
"I'm thrilled. As I mentioned, I have two little boys and hope I can set the example of physical fitness and get out there and be active," said Bickford.
Bickford's coach says he's hoping other older players might be inspired to try out for the team too.
The average age of UMA students is 32, so it's been tough for the school to field a team.
