Morgantown, WV (Sports Network) - Geno Smith was nearly flawless in throwing
for 407 yards and three scores to lead the West Virginia Mountaineers to a
59-10 rout of the Kansas Jayhawks in a Big 12 regular season finale at
Mountaineer Field.
Smith completed 23-of-24 pass attempts in the game and was intercepted once
for West Virginia (7-5, 4-5 Big 12). Andrew Buie rushed for 100 yards and a
score, Tavon Austin added 77 yards and a touchdown while Shawne Alston had
two scores and 40 yards on 10 carries. Stedman Bailey brought in 11 passes for
159 yards and two touchdowns. Tavon Austin had four catches for 110 yards.
Michael Cummings completed only 6-of-11 passes for 76 yards for Kansas (1-11,
0-9). Dayne Crist got some time under center as well and completed just 1-of-5
pass attempts for 41 yards and an interception. James Sims rushed for 57 yards
and a touchdown.
Buie scored on a two-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter to open up
the scoring.
Alston added a two-yard touchdown run of his own later in the period to push
West Virginia ahead 14-0.
Smith threw his first touchdown pass of the game to Bailey from eight yards
out early in the second quarter.
The Jayhawks responded with a one-yard touchdown run from Sims to make the
score 21-7.
Alston scored on a one-yard touchdown run and Smith threw an eight-yard
touchdown pass to J.D. Woods as the Mountaineers took a 35-7 lead into
halftime.
Tyler Bitancourt nailed a 30-yard field goal for West Virginia in the
beginning of the third quarter, after which the Mountaineers led 38-7.
That lead ballooned to 52-7 on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Bailey
and a one-yard touchdown run from Austin.
Nick Prolago hit a 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for Kansas.
The Mountaineers kept piling on with a 26-yard touchdown run from Dustin
Garrison.
West Virginia had a massive 647-274 advantage in total yards and had 32 first
downs to only 13 by Kansas. The Mountaineers scored touchdowns on 8-of-9
attempts in the red zone.
