ARMY - Trent Steelman set a school record, but the Black Knights fell to Stony
Brook, 23-3. Steelman rushed 17 times for 89 yards to set the school record
for rushing yards by a quarterback, passing Tory Crawford (1988) with 2,362
yards. However, the Black Knights fumbled the ball away four times and lost
the time of possession battle, 38:06 to 21:54. The defense also had all kinds
of trouble with Seawolves running back Miguel Maysonet, who ran for a career-
high 220 yards and scored twice. Army, at 0-4, has struggled mightily on both
sides of the ball this season. The Black Knights rank second nationally in
rushing offense (367.5 ypg), although that is largely out of sheer volume.
They rank 103rd nationally in scoring offense (21.8 ppg) and are 110th in
scoring defense (38.8 ppg). They also rank dead-last out of 120 FBS schools in
pass efficiency defense (180.7) and, as Maysonet showed on Saturday, aren't
too stout against the run, either. Army will try to turn it around this
weekend when Boston College comes to campus.
BYU - Coming off back-to-back narrow losses on the road, the Cougars came
through with a much needed 47-0 rout over Hawaii on Friday night. Taysom Hill
threw for a pair of scores and ran for another in the victory. Hill, a
freshman, completed 12-of-21 passes for 112 yards with an interception and ran
for 143 yards on 15 carries, highlighted by a 68-yard scoring scamper in the
second quarter. It was the first victory in BYU history for a true freshman
quarterback and only the second by any freshman starting his first game.
Jamaal Williams had 15 rushes for 155 yards and two touchdowns while Paul
Lasike also ran for a pair of scores. All told, the Cougars rushed for 396
yards. The last time BYU had two 100-yard rushers was Oct. 21, 2006 against
UNLV when Curtis Brown and Mike Hague rushed for 148 yards and 123 yards,
respectively. BYU will host Utah State this Friday night.
NAVY - The Midshipmen fell to 1-3 after Saturday's ugly 12-0 home loss to San
Jose State, marking the first shutout loss for Navy head coach Ken
Niumatalolo. The defense held the Spartans to four field goals, but the
offense once again struggled. In their three losses this season, the Mids have
scored just 10, 7 and 0 points. Trey Miller ran for 28 yards and threw for 41
on 4-of-9 passing to account for almost half of Navy's offensive production.
The Midshipmen gained only 144 total yards for the game. It was the team's
fewest yardage output since 2002. San Jose State dominated in time of
possession, holding the ball for 36:19 in the win. Navy converted only 3-of-13
third down attempts while recording just 11 first downs. The last time Navy
opened the season 1-3 was in 2002 when the team finished 2-10 for the season.
The Mids will try to get it going at Air Force on Saturday.
NOTRE DAME - The Fighting Irish got a chance to rest up with a bye this week,
and they'll need it. On tap in the coming weeks are Miami, Stanford, BYU and
Oklahoma.
