Clemson, SC (Sports Network) - Dabo Swinney signed a three-year contract
extension Thursday to remain the head football coach at Clemson through the
2017 season.
The new deal will net Swinney $1.965 million per year, plus performance
incentives and escalators.
Swinney, who took over the reins full-time in 2009, led Clemson to its first
ACC title in 20 years last season with a 10-4 record.
"We had many landmark accomplishments this past year, including winning the
ACC championship in a very competitive league," Swinney said. "The
administration has provided us with the resources to continue our pursuit to
be the best in the ACC and compete for the national championship for years to
come."
Swinney, 42, served as interim head coach for Clemson's final six games of the
2008 season before having the interim tag removed in the summer.
"We feel very good about the direction of our football program," Clemson
athletic director Terry Don Phillips said. "In a short period of time, coach
Swinney has taken us to two Atlantic Division titles, had two top 10
recruiting classes, two top 25 seasons, and won an ACC championship in a
season when the league was strong enough to have two teams selected for BCS
bowls for the first time."
Swinney was the assistant head coach and wide receivers coach before being
elevated on October 13, 2008 to head man after Tommy Bowden stepped down.
Swinney is a 1993 graduate of Alabama and was a member of the Crimson Tide's
1992 national championship squad.
