Carbondale, IL (Sports Network) - Desmar Jackson led the Southern Illinois
Salukis with 18 points as they took down the Northern Iowa Panthers, 63-57, in
Missouri Valley Conference play at SIU Arena.
Jackson also pulled down seven rebounds for the Salukis (13-16, 5-12 MVC),
who have won two in a row and four of their last five. Jeff Early contributed
14 points and eight rebounds.
Marc Sonnen led the Panthers (17-13, 10-7) with 18 points while knocking down
four 3-pointers. Jake Koch scored 12 points and Deon Mitchell added 10 points
and eight assists. Seth Tuttle grabbed nine rebounds as UNI suffered its
second consecutive loss after a six-game win streak.
SIU dominated in the first half as the Salukis shot an even 50 percent from
the field and went 5-of-10 from beyond the arc while limiting UNI to just 33.3
percent from the floor and 4-of-15 efficiency from 3-point range. The Salukis
led 39-24 at halftime.
In the second half, the Panthers improved their shooting to 41.4 percent from
the field and went 5-of-17 from long-range. They were able to outscore the
Salukis, 33-24, but could not overcome the first half deficit.
UNI took 32 shots from 3-point range but hit on just eight of those attempts.
The Panthers also had 16 turnovers which led to 17 points for the Salukis.
