Des Moines, IA (Sports Network) - Ben Simons dropped 21 points, shooting 4-
of-5 from behind the arc, to lead the Drake Bulldogs to a 74-71 overtime
victory versus the Indiana State Sycamores in a Missouri Valley Conference
clash at then Knapp Center.
Jordan Clarke chipped in 13 points and six rebounds for Drake (11-11, 5-6 MVC)
while Joey King netted 12 points off the bench. Richard Carter added 11
points as Drake won its second consecutive game.
Dawon Cummings led Indiana State (14-8, 7-4) with a career-high 16 points,
while Jake Odum and RJ Mahurin scored 14 points apiece. Justin Gant added 11
points.
Indiana State led from the opening tip and held a 34-32 advantage after the
first period despite making just 2-of-9 from long range.
King hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring in the second half and Drake held its
lead until the 7:14 mark when Devonte Brown knotted the score at 57-57. King
struck again with a layup with 1:09 left in regulation, giving the
Bulldogs a two-point edge. However, Odum responded with a layup at the other
end to knot the score at 67-67 and send the game into overtime.
Drake held ISU to just four points in the extra session. After failing to
record a field goal all night, Chris Hines drilled two free throws to give
Drake a 74-71 edge with time running out. The Sycamores had two 3-point
attempts in the final seconds but both were off the mark which allowed the
Bulldogs to hold on.
ISU improved to 41-35 all-time against Drake.
