Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Tymell Murphy scored 22 points to lead the FIU
Panthers to a 70-64 win over the North Texas Mean Green in Sun Belt Conference
action at U.S. Century Bank Arena.
Murphy shot 11-of-16 from the floor for FIU (9-8, 4-4 Sun Belt), and he has
now reached double figures in 15 of 17 games this season. Jerome Frink added
10 rebounds for the Panthers.
Roger Franklin netted a career-high 29 points on 11-of-15 from the floor to
pace North Texas (7-12, 2-6), which fell to 0-7 on the road this season. Niko
Stojiljkovic and Alzee Williams each scored 13 points. Leading scorer Tony
Mitchell went without a point in 32 minutes of action, but he blocked his
120th career shot early in the second half to break the program record.
North Texas shot 55 percent in the first half, but it trailed 36-24 at
intermission after turning the ball over 13 times. FIU made 46.9 percent of
its field goal attempts and took 12 more shots than the Mean Green in the
opening 20 minutes.
After trailing by as many as 18 points in the second half, North Texas rallied
and cut the FIU lead to four with 1:07 remaining, but that's as close as the
Mean Green would get as the Panthers went on the seal the game at the foul
line.
FIU has now won five of its last six outings, while North Texas are losers of
six of eight.
