Irvine, CA (Sports Network) - UC Irvine held the Aggies of UC Davis scoreless
in overtime as the Anteaters captured the 69-58 win in the Big West Conference
opener for both squads at the Bren Events Center.
Adam Folker and Daman Starring both scored 15 points for UCI (7-7, 1-0 Big
West), the former adding a game-high 14 rebounds as well for the Anteaters as
they won their second straight and the third in the last four outings. Alex
Young chipped in 12 points and Will Davis II contributed 10 for the hosts.
Corey Hawkins led all scorers with 21 points for the Aggies (4-8, 0-1),
followed by Josh Ritchart with 15 points and seven rebounds as they suffered
their second loss in the last three games.
Irvine shot just 34.4 percent from the floor in the first half, adding just 5-
of-12 at the free-throw line, but because the Aggies never even made a trip to
the charity stripe, the Anteaters were able to stay within striking distance
at the break, down just four points at 34-30.
In the second half the largest lead was just six points and while Hawkins gave
the Aggies a 58-56 lead with 11 seconds left in regulation, Starring responded
with a jumper of his own in the waning moments in order to send the meeting
into overtime.
In the extra session Starring scored the first five points for the hosts and
the Irvine defense held the Aggies without a single point, en route to the
double-digit win.
UC Davis finished the outing with just 3-of-17 shooting beyond the arc and was
outscored at the free-throw line, 13-3.
