Honolulu, HI (Sports Network) - Manny Arop scored a career-high 27 points as
the Indiana State Sycamores hung on for a thrilling 87-85 victory over the Ole
Miss Rebels in the opening round of the Diamond Head Classic at the Stan
Sheriff Center.
Jake Odum filled the stat sheet for Indiana State (6-3) with 16 points, eight
rebounds, and eight assists. Justin Gant contributed a double-double with 12
points and 11 boards. R.J. Mahurin also tallied 12 points and Dawon Cummings
chipped in 10 for the Sycamores, who advance to the next round to play the
winner of the San Diego State and San Francisco matchup.
Marshall Henderson paced Ole Miss (8-2) with 27 points. Reginald Buckner
recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Murphy Holloway
did as well with 16 points and 13 boards.
The Sycamores were in control early on as they hit 46.9 percent of their field
goal attempts and converted 9-of-11 at the free throw line to build a 44-33
lead heading into halftime. Ole Miss shot 45.2 percent from the floor but
trailed at the break after making only 1-of-4 at the charity stripe.
The Rebels rallied back by hitting 5-of-13 from beyond the arc in the second
half. Ole Miss was trailing by five with under two minutes remaining before
Jarvis Summer made his only jumper of the game to make it a one possession
game. Nick Williams then made his only shot from beyond the arc in the contest
with 1:07 left to tie it up at 75. Neither side managed to score again which
sent the game into an extra session.
Odum went a perfect 6-of-6 at the charity stripe in the overtime period to
help Indiana State build an 87-83 lead. Buckner made it a two-point game with
one second left in overtime and Summers stole the inbounds pass, but his
three-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark.
Ole Miss lost despite scoring 24 points off of turnovers and 29 second chance
points.
