Amherst, MA (Sports Network) - Jesse Morgan knocked down 7-of-10 attempts from
three-point range to score a career-high 35 points as the Massachusetts
Minutemen took down the Ohio University Bobcats, 85-76, in a non-conference
tilt at the Mullins Center.
Cady Lalanne posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the
Minutemen (6-3).
For the Bobcats (7-4), D.J. Cooper posted a double-double with 23 points and
10 assists, Walter Offutt finished with 18 points, Nick Kellogg scored 15
points and Ivo Baltic pulled down 10 rebounds. The loss was the second in a
row for Ohio.
Both teams shot well to open the contest. UMass hit on 48.4 percent from the
field, including 6-of-11 from beyond the three-point arc. After trailing by 12
points with 14:48 to play in the first half, UMass went on a 23-1 run over the
next five minutes to take a 48-40 lead into the break. Ohio shot even better,
connecting on 51.7 percent of their field goal attempts, including 7-of-15
from three-point range, but were outscored 12-3 at the free-throw line in the
opening half.
After the intermission, the teams cooled off a bit. The Minutemen made 47.8
percent of their field goal attempts in the second half and missed all but
three of their thirteen three-point tries. The Bobcats fell to just 40 percent
shoot from the field, but did manage to make 5-of-15 from beyond the arc.
Again they were outscored 12-3 from the free-throw line. With the game tied
at 55 with just over 14 minutes to play, the Minutemen reeled off 11
unanswered points to take control of the contest and secure the victory.
Morgan's 35 points scored is the most by any Atlantic 10 player this season.
