Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - Brandon Young finished with 18 points and nine
assists to help the DePaul Blue Demons coast to a 78-61 victory over the
Arizona State Sun Devils in a non-conference tilt at Wells Fargo Arena.
Cleveland Melvin recorded a double-double for DePaul (7-3) with 12 points and
10 boards. Worrel Clahar added 14 points and Moses Morgan connected on 5-of-6
attempts from the field to net 11 points. The win was the fifth in a row for
the Blue Demons.
The Sun Devils (8-2) had their four-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
Carrick Felix, Jahii Carson, and Evan Gordon scored 12 points each. Jordan
Bachynski got into the mix with 10 points and two blocks while Jonathan
Gilling grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
ASU opened up the game on a 7-0 run, but the Blue Demons rallied back and led
by as many as 14 before they took a 42-33 advantage into halftime. DePaul's
bench scored 18 points in the opening 20 minutes during which time the ASU
reserves failed to produce a single point.
DePaul knocked down 55.2 percent of its field goal attempts in the second half
to maintain a comfortable edge in the scoreboard until the final buzzer. The
Sun Devils were unable to overcome the deficit after converting only 2-of-9
from beyond the arc after halftime.
The Blue Demons dominated inside as they outscored the hosts 12-6 on second
chance points and held a 44-34 edge in the rebounding battle.
