Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Paris Gulley scored 21 points as the
Milwaukee Panthers outlasted the Northern Illinois Huskies to walk away from
the non-conference overtime thriller with an 80-73 victory.
Kyle Kelm added 15 points for Milwaukee (3-6), which also received 14 points
from James Haarsma. Jordan Aaron registered a double-double by also scoring 14
points to go along with 11 assists. Haarsma and Thierno Niang grabbed seven
rebounds each for the Panthers as they ended their five-game losing slide.
Akeem Springs came off the bench for the Huskies (2-6) to score 21 points and
pull down nine rebounds. Abdel Nader chipped in 17 points and Sam Mader
tallied 10 in the loss.
Milwaukee was in control early on and knocked down 8-of-19 attempts from
three-point range in the first half to build a 37-28 advantage as the game
progressed into the intermission. The Huskies converted 41.4 percent of their
field goal attempts including only 1-of-5 from three-point range in the
opening 20 minutes.
NIU heated up after the break to connect on 45.7 percent of its shots from the
floor. The Panthers saw their lead evaporate after managing to drain only 1-
of-10 attempts from distance in the second half. Milwaukee led 49-39 with
14:38 left before the final buzzer, but the Huskies produced a 13-2 run to
jump back in front. The game went back-and-forth from there and Milwaukee
owned a 68-66 lead before Bolin made a layup with 16 seconds left in
regulation to tie it up. Aaron missed a three-pointer in the closing seconds,
which sent the game into overtime.
The Huskies went 1-of-9 from the floor in the extra session, which allowed
Milwaukee to escape with the seven-point triumph.
The very closely contested battle was reflected in the rebounding battle, as
the Panthers held a narrow 42-41 edge on the boards.
