Riverside, CA (Sports Network) - Robert Smith scored a game-high 21 points to
lead the UC Riverside Highlanders to a 69-63 win over the Northern Colorado
Bears in non-conference action at the Student Recreation Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Highlanders (2-6) was Chris Harriel
with 17 points, while Taylor Johns came off the bench to clear a team-best 12
rebounds in just 17 minutes of action as the team snapped a three-game slide.
The Bears (1-4) were paced by Tim Huskisson who registered a double-double
with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Derrick Barden had a double-double of
his own with 11 points and a game-high 14 boards. Tate Unruh tallied a team-
best 17 points, shooting 5-of-10 behind the three-point line, followed by
Tevin Svihovec with 13, but still the team was sent to a fourth-straight
setback.
UNC opened the meeting on a 5-0 run, but the Bears ended up hitting on a mere
five field goals in the period, including 2-of-11 beyond the arc, leaving them
with a 28-16 deficit at the break.
In the second half UCR made good on 60.0 percent from the floor, which
somewhat covered up the fact that the Highlanders were just 15-of-35 at the
free-throw line in the frame, en route to the six-point win.
UCR managed to grab the win despite turning the ball over 20 times and
shooting an abysmal 21-of-45 (.467) at the charity stripe. The Bears were
charged with 23 miscues, which the Highlanders turned into 25 points.
