Williamsburg, VA (Sports Network) - Marcus Thornton scored 23 points to lead
the William & Mary Tribe to a 71-62 victory over the Old Dominion Monarchs in
the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both sides at Kaplan Arena.
Thornton connected on 5-of-9 three-point attempts and dished off four assists
in the win. Brandon Britt and Tim Rusthoven each added 15 points for the
Tribe (4-3, 1-0 CAA), which snapped a three-game losing streak with the win.
Terry Tarpey shot 4-of-5 from the field for nine points in 18 minutes off the
bench.
The Monarchs (1-6, 0-1) got a career-high 17 points from freshman Keenan
Palmore, who also finished with six rebounds and five assists. Nick Wright
contributed 12 points while leading scorer Dimitri Batten managed just nine.
The Tribe knocked down five three-pointers in the first half to take a 32-31
lead into the intermission. Both Thornton and Rusthoven reached double
figures, combining for 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor in the
opening 20 minutes.
ODU kept it close for the first few minutes of the second half but with the
score knotted at 40 with 15:29 remaining, William & Mary went on a 12-2 run
with baskets by five different players. The Tribe knocked down its free
throw attempts late in the contest to hold on for the win.
Despite the loss, the Monarchs' bench outscored the Tribe's reserves, 19-10.
