Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Ceola Clark led all scorers with 27 points
as the Western Illinois Leathernecks claimed a 68-63 win over the UMKC
Kangaroos in Summit League play from Municipal Auditorium.
Clark buried 5-of-8 3-pointers for the game and went 6-of-6 at the foul line.
Terell Parks recorded a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds, while
Jack Houpt chipped in with 11 points for the Leathernecks (5-3, 2-0 SL)
Thomas Staton scored 15 points off the bench to pace the Kangaroos (3-4, 1-1).
Fellow reserves Nelson Kirksey and Alton Tanner scored 11 and 10 points,
respectively, as none of UMKC's starters reached double figures.
WIU jumped out to an early 14-3 lead and spent the rest of the game playing
frontrunner. The Kangaroos made only 8-of-21 field goals in the first half
(.381). Meanwhile, Western Illinois shot 6-of-9 from the perimeter (.667) in
the opening frame to build a 34-22 halftime lead.
After making only 2-of-3 free throws in the first half, the Leathernecks sank
15-of-21 free throws over the final 20 minutes to seal the win. Parks came up
big in the second stanza, tallying 10 points, seven boards and three blocks.
