Blacksburg, VA (Sports Network) - Erick Green poured in a game-high 27 points
and went 11-for-11 from the free throw line as Virginia Tech knocked off
Appalachian State, 87-76, on Friday at Cassell Coliseum.
Jarell Eddie netted 23 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while Marshall Wood
contributed 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Hokies (5-0).
C.J. Barksdale finished with 10 points and seven boards in the victory.
Jay Canty scored a team-high 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while
Jamaal Trice added 19 points for the Mountaineers (1-4). Tab Hamilton and
Nathan Healy donated 15 and 11 points, respectively, in the setback.
Appalachian State got out to a quick start, leading 12-9 with less than six
minutes played in the opening half. Virginia Tech responded with a 25-14
surge over the next seven-plus minutes to build a 34-26 advantage.
The Mountaineers answered with eight straight points to tie the game at 34-34
with less than four minutes to go in the half, but they went into the locker
room trailing by a 41-38 score.
Appalachian State hung around for a while in the second half and trailed 60-58
with 10:41 to go, but Virginia Tech pulled away with a 16-4 run to build a
comfortable 76-62 margin with 4:06 on the clock.
The Hokies cruised the rest of the way. They shot 50 percent from the floor
and outscored Appalachian State, 22-10, on the break.
