Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - A pair of free throws by Jason Calliste with 10
seconds remaining turned the tide for Detroit as the Titans captured a
thrilling 58-57 comeback win over the Milwaukee Panthers in Horizon League
action at Calihan Hall.
Calliste finished with 12 points for the Titans (14-12, 8-6 HL), hitting on 6-
of-9 shots at the charity stripe as the team posted a fifth win in six tries.
Ray McCallum tallied a game-high 18 points and Doug Anderson 12, while Eli
Holman chipped in eight points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
The Panthers (15-11, 8-6) were paced by Tony Meier who dropped in 17 points
and cleared six boards, but he was also charged with five of the team's 25
turnovers as they lost for the third time in the last four games.
Detroit missed all seven opportunities behind the three-point line in the
first half and shot just 9-of-26 from the floor, yet the squad trailed by just
five points at the break, 27-22. The Panthers shot 50 percent from the floor
and 5-of-10 beyond the arc in the period, but failed to make a single trip to
the free-throw line.
In the second half both teams shot below 38 percent from the field and again
the Titans came up empty behind the three-point line (0-of-6), but even a
seven-point deficit with under two minutes to play was not enough to keep
Detroit down.
A bit of a sloppy game to say the least, the hosts were guilty of 20 turnovers
of their own and survived the meeting in spite of just 16-of-25 shooting at
the free-throw line.
