Ithaca, NY (Sports Network) - Johnathan Gray scored a game-high 29 points and
knocked down a crucial foul shot in the final seconds of overtime as the
Cornell Big Red secured a thrilling 85-84 win over the Yale Bulldogs in Ivy
League action at Newman Arena.
Also scoring in double figures for Cornell (9-12, 4-3 Ivy) was Chris
Wroblewski who tallied 18 points, adding 10 assists and seven rebounds as the
team won for the third time in the last four outings.
The Bulldogs (15-6, 5-2) were paced by Austin Morgan who scored 22 points,
leading four starters in double figures, as the team had a three-game win
streak come to an end. Michael Grace accounted for 15 points, Greg Mangano 14
and Jeremiah Kreisberg 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds in the losing
effort.
Yale shot the ball well from the field in the first half, hitting at a 51.9
percent clip in order to move out to a 14-point lead late in the period.
However, the Bulldogs converted just 4-of-9 at the free-throw line and 2-of-9
behind the three-point line in the period, allowing Cornell to battle back and
trail by just a single point at the break, 34-33.
In the second half Yale again shot the ball well from the floor (.550), but at
the same time Cornell was hitting on 6-of-13 beyond the arc and it was one of
those three-pointers by Gray with 12 seconds to play in regulation that put
the Big Red ahead by two points at 71-69.
At the other end Morgan knotted the score at 71-71 on a layup with just
seconds remaining, sending the meeting into overtime.
Cornell hit on 5-of-7 shots from the floor in the bonus period, but it was a
late free throw by Gray that gave the hosts a four-point lead at 85-81 before
Grace converted a three-pointer in the waning moments to leave the visitors
with the one-point loss.
Yale cost itself a chance at the win by turning the ball over 15 times,
miscues that the Big Red traded in for 23 points.
