Clay baseball team loses in 5A state title game

FORT MYERS, FLA. -- The Clay High School baseball team came up a little short in their quest to win a state championship in the 26th and final season for Blue Devils head coach Rob Thompson.

Tampa Jesuit defeated Clay 5-2 on Thursday afternoon to win the FHSAA Class 5A state championship at JetBlue Park.

The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Blue Devils were able to tie it up in the 4th inning thanks to a bases loaded walk from Jordan Desuyo and an RBI single from J.T. Turner. When Turner drove in the tying run, the bases were loaded with 1 out. After the go-ahead run scored, two Blue Devils base runners were caught in rundowns and both were tagged out to end the inning.

The Tigers took the lead for good with 2 runs in the 6th inning. They added one more in the 7th. Still, the Blue Devils had the potential tying run at the plate when Turner was picked off at first for the final out of the game.
