Heart of the game: Tempette Learning Academy

PONTE VEDRA, Fla. -- This week thousands of golf fans converge at TPC Sawgrass for THE PLAYERS Championship.

The tournament affectionately known as golf's fifth major is quite the experience for anyone.

So, no one would be surprised to hear that members of the Tempette Learning Academy basketball team were speechless when they arrived at the golf course. It was the first time any of them had been to the Ponte Vedra event.

In fact, these boys live in one of the roughest neighborhoods on the Northside of Jacksonville. Where these boys are from, some of their family friends and neighbors have never crossed the Main Street Bridge.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Detective Mike McCall says everyday these boys are forced to see violence and the people who live in their community are poor.

That is why McCall and Tonya Austin are working around the clock to expose these boys, who are considered high risk, to new things. McCall says he and Austin have the opportunity to show the team that life has more to offer than poverty and violence.

McCall believes exposing the boys to events like THE PLAYERS will encourage them to go back to the neighborhood and motivate their neighbors to want more.
