Georgia football player facing assault charge

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Police say a University of Georgia football player is facing a charge of aggravated assault, a felony.

University of Georgia Police Chief Jimmy Williamson said defensive lineman Jonathan Taylor was arrested early Tuesday after an altercation with his girlfriend at McWhorter Hall on the campus.

Williamson tells The Associated Press that officers found his girlfriend with marks around her neck.

The woman wasn't immediately taken to a hospital, but Williamson said he understands that she sought medical treatment later Tuesday.

Clarke County Jail reports show that Taylor was booked into the facility shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday. He was being held without bond.

The jail records do not indicate whether he has an attorney. Williamson said a new Georgia law allowed officers to file the felony charge.
