Former Providence 'Rock Star' Young gears up for Sweet 16

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Gator Fans are gearing up for a big win come Thursday. The NCAA Sweet 16 match features UCLA versus the Florida Gators, and the First Coast is cheering on one of their own.

A group of Providence High School students are paying close attention to the man they call, Providence High's rock star. That rock star is better known as Patric Young. The 6-foot-9 inch Gator graduated from Providence High School back in 2008.

Providence Basketball Coach Jim Martin coached Young for one year. Martin describes Patric as highly emotional and a slam-dunk athlete.

"Patric came his senior year, Patric was the leader of the team ... took us to the state championship ... had a Cinderella season ... McDonald's All-American ... we ranked sixth in the nation and sixth in the state," Martin said.

Patric also had an impact on Providence student Benjamin Bobbit. He's been playing basketball since the 8th grade and hopes to follow his dream to becoming a college player.

"He never lets down his teammates, he always goes 110 percent ... if he tells you something ... you can believe it."

Coach Martin is excited for Thursday's game and Young's future career on the court.

"His legacy here is solid for the rest of his life," said Martin.
