Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton had been breaking the NFL's strict uniform rules since his rookie season, but it was only just now noticed by the league. An Under Armour athlete, Newton has been wearing blacked-out Under Armour helmet clips to attach his visor to his facemask. Because Under Armour is not an official uniform partner of the NFL (that would be Nike), Newton is in violation of the rules.
"No invisible identification of a manufacturer's name or logo on the exterior of a helmet or on any attachment to a helmet is permitted unless provided for under a commercial arrangement between the League and manufacturer."
The infraction was first noticed by Forbes, and the news quickly spread. On Friday, the league fined Newton $10,000.
