JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament is gearing up for next week when 300 boats are expected to hit the Atlantic Ocean in the 33rd annual event.

On Wednesday, several boats went out with media members on board to test the waters for the tournament, which is one of biggest in the Southeast.

The biggest catch during the morning run was a 16-pound, 8-ounce kingfish.

The tournament held at Jim King Park and Sisters Creek boat ramp gets underway Tuesday with the Redneck VIP and the Junior Angler tournament starting the following day. General fishing, which runs for two days, kicks off on Thursday, July 18.

Before the economic downturn in 2008, as many as 1,000 boats took part in the kingfish tournament.

"At one time, it did have economic impact of $12 million on the local economy, now turned into a lot less," said Roger Walker, the tournament's executive director.

The weeklong event held at Sisters Creek on Hecksher Drive is open to general public at no charge with free parking.
