JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Jimmy Smith was released to house arrest after initially being sent to a Mississippi prison.

Smith was serving time on a six-year weapons and drug sentence.

According to First Coast News' partner The Florida Times-Union, Smith, 44, will have to wear an ankle bracelet but can go to work, school and church, said Tara Booth of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Smith was released from prison June 18, Booth said.

Smith was eligible for what the state classifies as an intensive supervision program.

Booth said Smith will also be eligible for parole in June 2014. One qualifying factor for the home monitoring is that the inmate be within 15 months of their earliest release date.

Smith was jailed Dec. 19 in Madison County and was there until Feb. 19, when he was transferred to the Department of Corrections.

If he is paroled, a parole board will set the terms of the release.
Smith was originally scheduled to be released in November 2018 after he was sentenced to four years on a charge of cocaine possession and two years on a charge of possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the T-U.

He had been serving his sentence at a community work center where he was allowed to work at government agencies and for nonprofits, Booth said.

He will live in Madison County, Mississippi, under the terms of the release.

Smith began with the Jaguars in 1995 and retired in May 2006.
