PONTE VEDRA, FL -- Former President Bill Clinton, Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown and some of the top golfers in the world were at TPC Sawgrass Friday morning for the "Birdies for the Brave" charity event.
"Birdies for the Brave" is a national outreach initiative dedicated to honoring and showing appreciation to the courageous men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.
Phil Mickelson and his wife Amy created the event in 2004 to support combat injured troops.
Mickelson says he has a personal connection to the military because his father served in the armed forces for many years.
This year, "Birdies for the Brave" was named by the White House one of the top 20 charities in the nation that support military families, as part of Joining Forces - an initiative created by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden to honor military families.
