Japanese shares rallied thanks to Tokyo's 2020 Olympics bid victory, which helped lift sentiment, while Chinese stocks surged following positive economic data that added to a picture of gradual recovery in the world's No. 2 economy.
Benchmark crude oil fell, but remains above $110 per barrel. The dollar gained against the euro and the yen.
