ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The Mumford and Sons concert in St. Augustine is a month away and hotels are booked solid.
Some locals see this as an opportunity to make a little extra dough. They are renting out their own property.
Trish Gilpin has a condo in St. Augustine Beach that she put on Craigslist specifically for the Mumford and Sons weekend. It's an idea that didn't come to her immediately.
"I didn't really think about it," Gilpin recalled. "Then I went, 'Oh! This is a slow time. I need to start running an ad.' And then I went, 'Mumford and Sons!'"
Her ad was out for only a few days when the phone started to ring for her rental property.
"It's more weekly rentals or month rentals. No I've never done this for an event, this is the first event," she smiled.
Three women are renting Gilpin's beach condo for $450 for two nights.
Someone else is offering on Craigslist a three bedroom home - just two blocks from the concert - for $3,000 for four nights over the concert weekend.
Someone else is even renting out a space to park an RV.
Glenn Hastings of The St. Johns County Tourism Development Council estimates $1.5 million will be generated in direct expenditures for the weekend. He said city estimates the concert's total economic impact at approximately $4.5 million.
St. Augustine City Manager John Regan said in February that the concert comes at a great time of the year.
"We have many weekends where we book out and sell out: the 4th of July, over Nights of Lights," Regan noted. "This is not an unusual experience for the city. It just doesn't happen in the middle of September."
September is typically a slow business month, but with the millions expected to roll in, folks like Gilpin wanted her own little slice of the pie.
She laugh, "Yeah! My little slice!"
