JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Fatal distractions. According to the Florida Department of Transportation, Jacksonville ranked in the top ten cities in the state for pedestrian and bicycle crashes with 41 deaths last year.
    
Now, the Florida Highway Patrol and Jacksonville Sheriff's Office are teaming up with FDOT to try and make our commutes safer.

Nearly 1,200 people were treated in hospital rooms in 2011 for injuries while doing walking and texting, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

And the CDC reports 15 people are killed each day by texting while driving.
    
But state and local agencies are now teaming up to change those statistics with the new program called "Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow."

"A lot of it has to do with people not being attentive," said Major Anthony Allen with the FHP.

"People getting into the hustle and bustle of life and just generally not paying attention and that results in a lot of these fatalities," said Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford.

The program focuses on engineering -- such as the addition of red light cameras at dangerous intersections.

And collaboration of law enforcement agencies to enforce of those laws.

"I think we're all to blame, and everybody can stand to hear this message: When you're driving you're car, drive your car, don't do all these other things. Clear your mind while you're out there and pay attention to what you're doing," said Rutherford.

But it's not just drivers and pedestrians -- Rutherford said the number of bicyclist fatallites was up 80% last year.

And he says this program is a step to make sure this is the *last* time any of those numbers go up.
