JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida School for the Deaf & Blind has a wide variety of athletic teams. Most of the students who compete have some type of hearing impairment, but there are also a few who have visual impairments.
Nick Thompson and Tyree Singleton both compete for the Dragons track team. On Tuesday afternoon, Singleton won his heat for the 400 meter dash in a track meet at Bishop Snyder High School. Both he and Thompson are visually impaired.
Meanwhile Andrew Soleyn throws the discus and shot put. He's had a hearing impairment for most of his life, but he didn't become visually impaired until surgery to remove a brain tumor a few years ago. The tumor was pressing against his pituitary gland, therefore he wasn't growing. That problem has since been fixed, but he lost most of his vision after the surgery.
