JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man who pleaded guilty in October to one federal charge of receiving child pornography over the internet and tried to destroy his computers and compact discs with a samurai sword before being arrested has been sentenced to 10 years.
After serving his federal prison sentence, Kamil Mezalka, 21, must also serve 10 years of supervised release and was ordered to forfeit computers and other digital media, according to a release from the office of U.S. Attorney Robert E. O'Neill.
The investigation began on March 15, 2012 when an FBI agent in Philadelphia
started looking into individuals who were sharing child pornography
files via a file sharing program, the release said.
The agent found that the directory of a particular screen name signed
into the network had more than 4,000 files, of which many had
descriptions of child pornography. The IP address was traced to a
residence in Palm Coast where Mezalka lived.
Mezalka was arrested at his Palm Coast home May 8, 2012.
When FBI agents arrived, they commanded Mezalka to leave his bedroom,
but he refused, the release said.
Upon entering Mezalka's bedroom, they found that he used a samurai
sword to try and destroy his computers and compact discs. He did not
obey commands to
drop the sword.
Mezalka's computer was examined and hundreds of files depicting child
sex abuse were found, the release stated. One of the hard drives had
more than 3,000 videos and 12,000 images. Of these, 100 videos and 500
images depicted child pornography.
On May 16, Mezalka was ordered to be detained pending the case's
resolution.
The case was investigated by the FBI, in Jacksonville and Philadelphia, and the Flagler County Sheriff's
Office. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney D. Rodney
Brown, and was brought about through Project Safe Childhood, according to the release.
