LAKE CITY, Fla. -- Two out-of-state fugitives were arrested Sunday morning by police at a Gateway Inn hotel on U.S. 90, according to a release from the Lake City Police Department.
The police were tipped off to the whereabouts of Daniel C. Wimmer, 35, and Rhonda Lee Russell-Smith, 47, who were both wanted for stealing over $100,000 in rare coins from a Indiana man, the release said.
Officers went to the motel and questioned Wimmer and Russell-Smith at 8:38 a.m. Sunday.
A background confirmed the two had warrants for grand theft as well as extradition with the Clarksville Police Department in Indiana.
Further investigation also revealed that Wimmer and Lee Russell-Smith had been traveling in a U-Haul, which was reported stolen by the Nashville Metro Police Department on Dec. 26, 2012.
Over the course of the next three months, the two fugitives allegedly used the $100,000 in stolen coins to fund their life on the run from Indiana to Delaware, Delaware to Nashville, and finally to Florida.
Both were booked into the Columbia County Detention Center on a total bond of $65,000.
Once the preliminary court proceedings are handled in Columbia County, the two suspects will then be extradited back to Indiana on their grand theft charges.
