JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It was termed by President Roosevelt as "a date which will live in infamy," but for more than 200 veterans at Mayport Friday, it is a day that still lives in their memories.
It was 71 years ago today, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor sending America into World War II.
Those veterans attended a pier side ceremony aboard the USS Dewert in remembrance of the lives lost during the 1941 attack.
This service has been a tradition at Mayport since 1966 and is put on by Mayport Fleet Reserve Association Branch 290.
Some Pearl Harbor survivors were expected to be attending the ceremony.
There was also a bell ringing, a wreath laying and a prayer for those who were killed.
In all around 2,403 people were killed during that attack with another nearly 1,200 wounded.
