HOBE SOUND, Fla. -- A prescribed burn is planned for a central Florida park.
The Seminole County Natural Lands Program will conduct the burn Thursday at the Econ River Wilderness Area if the weather cooperates. The park will be closed that day so officials can burn about 5.5 acres.
State fire officials say prescribed burning mimics natural fire cycles to restore healthy forests and natural communities, reduce undergrowth that accumulates over time and decreases the potential for wildfire. Burned lands experience an increase in native wildflowers, birds and other wildlife.
