JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A First Coast High School student is accused of bringing a gun to school.

Police said they found the gun near the student on Tuesday after he was seen with marijuana.

They searched the student's book bag, where they also found bullets. The student said they brought the gun to school because they forgot it was in their book bag.

Jill Johnson with Duval County Public Schools says this is the first time a firearm has been found on a school campus this year.

"The safety of our students is our top priority. This is a Zero Tolerance Offense in our Student Code of Conduct and we plan on following those guidelines for student discipline," Johnson said. "Although our investigation reveals that it does not appear that the gun was brought to school with any intent to harm students or faculty members, it is our intent to follow all protocols for student discipline."
