NEW YORK (AP) - Wall Street sent stock prices higher for a time in the latest session, only to see the key averages falter ahead of the closing bell.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 25 points to close at 13,077, a day after one of its worst drops this year.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 4 points to end at 1,409. The Nasdaq composite index was down 9 points to 2,982.

The market began to fade after 2 p.m., when the Federal Reserve repeated its assessment that the U.S. economy still needed help to increase growth and lower unemployment.

About four stocks fell for every three that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was average at 3.4 billion shares.
