ATLANTA -- Police say a teenage driver has died after his car careened into some wood and caught fire in suburban Atlanta last week.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that 19-year-old Akshay Panducherry died Wednesday at Grady Memorial Hospital. Panducherry suffered burns that covered more than 80 percent of his body.

Alpharetta Department of Public Safety spokesman George Gordon says Panducherry was heading east in a red Ferrari on Webb Bridge Road shortly before 4 a.m. on Oct. 19 when the car crash occurred in Alpharetta.

Gordon says Panducherry and his 21-year-old cousin Harshavardhan Patlolla who was the passenger were able to climb out of the vehicle but suffered second- and third-degree burns.

Patlolla is still hospitalized.

Gordon says authorities know that a high speed rate contributed to the crash.
