NEW YORK (AP) - Downbeat news on earnings took stocks sharply lower Tuesday.
The Dow dropped 243 points to 13,103. The S&P lost 21 points to 1,413, while the Nasdaq was down nearly 27 points to 2,990.
Some well-known companies reported weak sales and reduced their profit outlooks for the remainder of the year.
The Dow's biggest decline this year was 274 points. That was June 1, the day the government released a weak jobs report.
